Frequently Asked Questions

How the internet lectures are structured? Are there fixed dates scheduled for virtual lectures?
Lectures will be held in the active period. During the semester projects have to be accomplished and submitted via internet at fixed dates. At fixed times lecturers and students can discuss via Skype and even team work between participants is possible with our internet platform Moodle.

How much time in addition to the active periods is required to meet the semester’s objectives?
The time necessary depends on the individual participant. The targeted time per week is about 16-20 hours, so that the participants can still work beside the course.

What are credits/ECTS?
European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System is a standardized system based on the workload of the study required to achieve the objectives of a program. It allows to compare different degrees across Europe (and also worldwide).

To which extent knowledge on Structural Engineering is necessary for studying Membrane Structures?
Please have a look at the page “Introductory Course”, especially the description of the content which gives an indication on the kind of background knowledge that is required.

What extra costs e.g. for books, scripts and software can I expect?
In principle it is not necessary to spend a lot of additional money for books, scripts and software to follow the study. Required membrane programs will be provided by the lecturers for free. But each participant must have a computer, best a notebook for the present times, a 3D-Cad program for drawing (for example: AutoCAD, or Rhinoceros …), Excel and Word.
Concerning books the “European Design Guide for Tensile Surface Structures” (~40 EUR) is necessary. You can buy it here at the University in Dessau. (There are not many books available.)
