2013 - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Crosswall Dessau North
"Scheibe Dessau Nord" (Crosswall Dessau North) was erected 1965 as the longest slab block building in times of the East German communist regime. Although being in a more or less unchanged status since, it is booked out up to these days. While it was celebrated as a sign of setting off towards a new society in 1965, the valuation from the urban point of view has changed radically in the meanwhile. Situated just across Dessau City Hall, its dimensions exceed the scale of the city surrounding and, physically restricting, it blocks the connections within the city center and obstructs crucial developments in the cut- off areas, which rapidly deteriorate.
Dessau City Planning Department successfully applied for participation in the federal Experimental housing and Urban Development Program (ExWoSt) to work on strategies to develop this cut- off area. This includes to elaborate strategies to reduce, reuse, recycle the existing Crosswall, a task Dessau Summer School of Architecture 2013 takes over. In 2010, zector architects won Europan10 competition with Dessau Public Realm, "a proposition, that will assist Dessau-Roßlau to reclaim centrally located urban spaces for new public use".
So: Studio in 2013 is not only closely related to the theme of the German Pavillon at the 13th International Architecture Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia 2012. It also refers to proposals which are on the table already and to successful examples of architecture as a means to strengthen urban social networks´ identities like "Lesezeichen (bookmark) Salbke", "Unperfekthaus Essen" "PrincessGardens Berlin", "Students´ Highrise Munich" or "Lausitztower Hoyerswerda".
At the beginning, the analysis of social potentials and participants within the neighborhoods is very crucial for the architectural intervention. The program for the succeeding project is developed from this analysis. We work on the architectural upgrade of an area, which is situated in the core of Dessau next to ´Rathaus Center´. It is neighboring the partly abandoned "Volksbank" building, Dessau Summer School of Architecture 2012 brought up proposals for. The project is embedded to a collaboration of the Urban Planning Department of Dessau (ExWoSt Project) and Dessau City Planning Department.
Studio will be part of Universities´ cooperation with the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.
